We're off! Metz get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Ligue 1 game between Metz and Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Saint-Symphorien.
All the talk heading into tonight’s clash has been concerned with one man: Kylian Mbappe. The talented teenager finally confirmed his future last week when he joined PSG on loan with an option to buy for an estimated £166m. That would make him the second most expensive player in the world behind Neymar, and both are set to start here tonight as the Parisiens set their sights on a fifth consecutive win.
Last season’s second-place finish - eight points behind winners Monaco - was a devastating blow for big-spending PSG, and Mbappe’s signing is a serious move by the six-time league winners. Just as disappointing was the stunning defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League, a competition in which the French giants are yet to enjoy any real success. With Mbappe and Neymar in their ranks, now is surely the time for them to finally become one of Europe’s elite clubs.
PSG did well to come from behind to beat Monaco in July’s Trophee des Champions, and since then they’ve rarely looked in danger of having their domestic winning run come to an end. Toulouse are the only side to have managed to score against them in Ligue 1 this season, with Saint Etienne being the latest team to fail to get the better of Unai Emery’s men.
With Mbappe now featuring in their front line, PSG are an even scarier prospect for their opponents than they already were. This evening’s meeting couldn’t have come at a worse time for Metz, who have suffered a dreadful start to the season that has left them rooted to the bottom of the table without a single point from their opening four games.
Caen managed to get the better of Metz just before the international break, and tonight’s hosts are set for another really difficult evening this time round. It’s now 17 years since they last managed to get the better of PSG, with the last six meetings between the two teams ending in victories for the Parisiens. They fought hard in last season’s corresponding fixture, however, and were cruelly beaten by a last-minute Blaise Matuidi goal.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Philippe Hinschberger has decided to make four changes to the Metz side that started the 1-0 defeat away to Caen, with Chris Philipps, Moussa Niakhate, Mathieu Dossevi and Emmanuel Riviere coming into the starting line-up to replace Fallou Diagne, Geronimo Poblete, Opa N’Guette and Ablie Jallow, respectively.
Meanwhile, PSG boss Unai Emery has made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Layvin Kurzawa, Javier Pastore and the injured Angel Di Maria making way for Yuri, Julian Draxler and Kylian Mbappe.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: METZ 1-1 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
It's not quite going to plan for PSG, who struggled to find a way in front and then quickly conceded an equaliser after letting Dossevi sprint into the box to set up Riviere. The visitors have dominated possession but not done enough with it, allowing Metz to get back into the game and enjoy a few periods of positive play towards the end of the first period. The Parisiens will have to increase the tempo if they're to find a second goal after the break.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: METZ 1-5 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Heading into the second half it looked as if PSG were in for a tough time against a determined Metz side, but a controversial red card shown to Assou-Ekotto ended the hosts' chances of holding on and allowed the visitors to come away with an easy win. From then onwards it was little more than a training exercise, with the Parisiens thoroughly enjoying themselves every time they pushed forward.
