Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
Atletico Madrid will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start in the league, whilst a victory for Villarreal will move them level on points with the home side.
A first-half goal from Kevin Gameiro secured all three points for Diego Simeone’s side against Celta Vigo last weekend, whilst ensuring they remained unbeaten in the league alongside Barcelona and Valencia. Atletico Madrid stumbled in midweek, however, by only drawing against third-tier Elche in the first-leg of their Copa Del Rey tie.
Villarreal made it three league victories in a row after beating Las Palmas 4-0 last weekend, a result which moved them up to sixth in the LaLiga table. Similar to the away side, Javier Calleja’s team, who were unbeaten prior to this Copa Del Rey tie since he took over in September, suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Ponferradina on Wednesday.
Atletico Madrid lost both matches against today’s opponents last season, with Villarreal winning 1-0 away from home and 3-0 at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
HEAD TO HEAD: Villarreal have won three times in their last five encounters, with Atletico Madrid winning once whilst drawing the other contest.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick-off, so let’s reveal how the two teams line-up…
Atletico Madrid have made one change from their last league match, with Filipe Luis replacing Lucas Hernandez in defence.
The away side have also made one change, with Samu Castillejo moving to the bench for Roberto Soriano.
The teams walk out to a rapturous reception from everyone inside the newly opened Wanda Metropolitano stadium. The game will get underway shortly.
HALF-TIME - ATLETICO MADRID 0-0 VILLARREAL - The one minute of additional time comes to an end as the first-half finishes in a stalemate. Both teams have had chances, in what has been an even match, but neither have took control for significant spells of the game. Cedric Bakambu should have done better after wasting a chance when played clean through by the away side, whilst Diego Godin saw his header saved superbly on the stroke of half-time for the hosts.
The teams emerge from the tunnel as we await the start of the second-half.
FULL-TIME - ATLETICO MADRID 1-1 VILLARREAL - An even contest ends in a draw at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. There were very few chances in the first-half with Cedric Bakambu squandering a one on one for the away side, whilst Diego Godin had his header saved superbly. The home side started the second-half strongly, creating multiple opportunities before finding the net through Angel Correa. The Argentinian controlled a fantastic volleyed pass from Griezmann, before drifting past his opponent and finding the net. Villarreal did not let their heads drop, however, as they pushed for an equaliser before eventually being rewarded. A corner was met by Carlos Bacca, who powered his header past Jan Oblak with ten minutes to go to share the points with Atletico Madrid.
Thank you for joining our Live Text Commentary between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal as Diego Simeone's side maintained their unbeaten start in LaLiga. Until next time, goodbye.
