Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League match between Tottenham and Manchester United.
Tottenham are still in the title race after Manchester City beat Liverpool earlier this month. Mauricio Pochettino’s men can go six points off the top with victory in this one. Spurs thrashed Tranmere in the FA Cup last Friday and got the better of Chelsea in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final in midweek. The north London club will be full of confidence despite losing their last home league match in a shock defeat to Wolves.
Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s Manchester United reign has started perfectly with five wins from his first five matches. This is the first real test of Solskjaer’s tenure, however, as Manchester United look to get back in contention for a top four spot. The Red Devils are nine points off fourth-placed Chelsea after the Blues beat Newcastle on Saturday evening. Solskjaer has his side playing with freedom again, it will be interesting to see if that continues against a strong Spurs team.
SUBS: Erik Lamela, Davinson Sanchez, Paulo Gazzaniga, Danny Rose, Oliver Skipp, Juan Foyth, Fernando Llorente.
TOTTENHAM (4-3-1-2): Hugo Lloris; Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Ben Davies; Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Christian Eriksen; Dele Alli; Harry Kane, Son Heung-min.
SUBS: Fred, Diogo Dalot, Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira, Scott McTominay, Sergio Romero, Romelu Lukaku.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David De Gea; Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw; Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic; Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial; Marcus Rashford.
Manchester United lead 1-0 against Tottenham at Wembley thanks to Rashford’s goal late in the first half. The visitors were the brighter side for the majority of the first 45 minutes but did not create many clear goal scoring opportunities before Pogba played in Rashford for the game’s only goal. Tottenham came closest through Winks early on but have looked fatigued and lost Sissoko to injury.
Solskjaer will be pleased with what he has seen from his side so far. Martial and Rashford have been a threat in behind and Pogba has been able to get time and space in midfield. Pochettino will be a little disappointed with Spurs’ performance, particularly their vulnerability defensively. Injuries have left Spurs very light in midfield, which is causing them plenty of problems. Pochettino does not have many options on the bench, having already brought on Lamela. Rose could replace Davies, who did not have a great first half. Solskjaer will not be in a rush to make any changes, though he could bring Lukaku on later in the match to give yet more pace on the break.
Solskjaer will be delighted with the result and elements of the performance. United are now level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal and have won six matches in a row. They face Brighton next Saturday before a huge FA Cup match against the Gunners. Spurs will be left wondering how they failed to score. Their finishing was poor, and the defeat leaves them just one point ahead of Chelsea. It’s a trip to Fulham up next for Tottenham, before returning to cup action against Chelsea and Crystal Palace later this month.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
